The hosts have had their difficulties this season, but at home in the Champions League they have been excellent. They were widely considered underdogs for qualification in a group that included both Chelsea and Atletico Madrid, but they picked up a 3-0 win at home to Chelsea and a draw against Atletico Madrid, results which saw them top the group with 11 points.
Shakhtar Donetsk finished 2nd in their group behind Manchester City, although they did pick up some bragging rights in the final group game as they became the first team to beat Manchester City this season. A long winter break followed soon after that win, and they only returned to action a month or so ago.
Shakhtar don’t have the best record away from home in the Champions League though. They lost two of their three group games on the road and have failed to score in six of their last seven trips away in the competition but they have been so dminant in the first leg and Roma is actually lucky to have lost only 2-1.
I believe Shakhtar is urrently strong enough to qualify for the next stage and not get beaten tonight.
