A few years back Panathinaikos v Club Brugge would have been a group stage match up but the sides have dropped a level or so recently. Panathinaikos are 20 times Greek champions but have not taken the title since 2010 after a few financial problems. They finished 2nd last year in the regular season and then won the CL playoff round also. The side is packed with quality though but should have enough for these early rounds – whether they can take that into the group stages and beyond is a doubt though. Overall European experience is vast with 267 matches. They have 94 wins, 65 draws and 108 losses. Club Brugge of Belgium are quite similar in overall out look to the home side. A regular in UCL group stages and beyond in the late 90s early 00s but then a fall on hard times. They are ranked higher at UEFA at 51. They hold 13 league titles but surprisingly none since 2005. They have 275 games with 137 wins, 57 draws and 94 losses. A tough game for both sides in what will be a raucous Athens cauldron. Very evenly matched tie but for me I think at home Pana will have the better of this 1st leg. It’s too tough to call over the qualification as I believe both sides will win at home.
