Dick Advocaat enjoyed a dream brief spell in charge of the Black Cats last term - but it has turned quickly into a nightmare. After earning cult hero status on Wearside for his heroics in keeping Sunderland in the division last season, Advocaat, despite the wishes of his wife, signed a one-year deal in the summer to continue the job he thought he’d finished. However, winless and bottom of the table after six games has drastically changed the mood from just a few months ago where Advocaat was lauded for his part in Sunderland’s escape. 2014 League Cup winners Manchester City defeated opponents Sunderland in the final that season, coming out on top as 3-1 victors. City have had a frustrating week or so following successive 2-1 home defeats to Juventus and West Ham in a matter of days. Manuel Pellegrini has, as ever, remained calm over the matter and will be hoping for a fighting response in the cup on Tuesday. Sunderland’s woeful form looks to give them little chance of causing a potential shock, despite City’s recent mediocre record at the Stadium of Light. Even with seven first team players missing through injury, Pellegrini’s side will expect to win comfortably.
